Getting to Know Balinese Carving: Materials, Characteristics and Motifs

Balinese carvings are widely used in homes, holy places, displays and various souvenirs.This carving art has become part of Balinese life.

Balinese carvings are made using moja echo wood, teak wood and cempaka wood.  There are also Balinese carvings made using padas stone. Characteristics of Balinese carving, it has distinctive characteristics, namely flower, leaf and fruit motifs which are a combination of concave shapes.

A number of villages in Bali are famous for their size art, namely Peken Belayu Village, Mas Village in Ubud, Tangep Village in Mengwi, Marga Village in Tabanan, and Guwang Village in Sukawati.  According to average, the village's popularity has been known abroad.

This Balinese carved motif is a relic of ancient kingdoms.  Balinese wood carving motifs are generally in the form of wayang motifs, such as the Rama and Sinta statues, the Dewa Ruci statue, the Nakula Sadewa statue, and so on.
